The home route of the modern search (part 5)

Only three weeks to go before I return to clinical work from maternity leave, I'm really on the home straight. As I would have predicted, my search for most of the Physioplus courses didn't go exactly according to plan, although I certainly wouldn't have predicted the reason for it – who would have done that ?! At this point, I was expecting to have taken many courses specific to my area of expertise to refresh my memory so that I can really get started again on my first day.

Instead, I spent my (very little) free time completing the many COVID-19 related courses on Physioplus (five new courses went live in July). At this point, however, I would say that on that first day, week, and month in the clinic, these will be far more helpful to me than the technical MSK I was considering. That first day back certainly won't be like coming back from my other two maternity leave. I expect a very steep learning curve because of COVID!

Realistically speaking, being a physiotherapist is a lot like riding a bicycle. They don't forget how to listen, connect, look for barriers and solutions. If you don't know these basics, you can look up the occasional test log or cut-off score that you haven't thought about in a year. However, COVID-19 is so far removed from anything many of us have experienced that it makes returning to work so much more daunting. On the one hand, I feel very fortunate to be on leave when the world was turned upside down because I didn't have to face the health, professional and financial uncertainties that so many had. On the other hand, it sounds pretty appealing to me to be familiar with the new normal from working for the past few months, with the worst insecurity in the past, while sitting quietly before the storm (especially when I return ) The clinic coincides with the return of my children to school and daycare. I really hope things don't get as stormy as I expected!).

Because of my own insecurity, I found the COVID-19 courses so helpful. As someone who has been on the sidelines so far during this pandemic, I found it really interesting to see the breadth and depth of what people with COVID-19 might experience, even if I am not dealing with acute issues or issues in sub-acute issues my clinic (private outpatient practice). It was also very helpful to read up on the persistent problems that had been reported, such as fatigue, weakness, imbalance, and silent hypoxia. I feel adequately prepared so that if I happen to see a patient in rehabilitation from COVID-19 on that first day, I have a good grasp of what to ask, rate, and what our initial treatment program might look like. This preparation goes a long way towards building my self-confidence and reducing uncertainty about this step, which I am about to take. And as a big bonus, I didn't have to spend any time looking for all of the information myself! With so little free time at home with three kids, it's wonderful to take advantage of the work the Physiopedia team has put into finding and putting this information together in one convenient place. I also know that I can access the information at any time via my computer or the practical Physiopedia app. Trust ++.
