Dry needling as a modality is increasingly used in the treatment of patients, and more healthcare providers are now able to incorporate it into their specialty. This prompted the authors to update the first edition of this book with current knowledge and to include chapters on the treatment of people with various diseases such as tendinopathy, enthesopathy and spasticity.

The book Trigger Point Dry Needling: An Evidence and Clinical-Based Approach by Jan Dommerholt and César Fernández-de-las-Peñas is divided into three parts with several chapters in each part.

Part one: Basics of trigger point drying needles

This first part deals with the concepts of myofascial trigger points and the proposed mechanisms and effects of trigger point dry needling. It expands the use of dry needling on scars, tendons and treatment in patients with neurological disorders, the scope of the practice, and the different professionals who use dry needles. The authors also discuss safety guidelines including hygiene, contraindications, precautions, anatomical considerations, procedural adverse events, the importance of patient selection, and general principles such as patient education, consent, and practical use.

Second part: Clinical and evidence-based approach of trigger point dry needles

The second part focuses on the evidence base for the application of dry needling to muscles in different parts of the body. Each chapter introduces general diseases related to the body area and then explains the clinical relevance of myofascial trigger points in syndromes in this area. Deep needling the muscles in that area is then discussed by listing each muscle and explaining the anatomy, function, innervation, trigger point pain transfer, the needle technique for that muscle, and the precautions to be taken. Color images are provided for each muscle to show hand position, grip, needle angle, and technique used. * The anatomy is described without existing anatomy pictures, so it is recommended to have an anatomy atlas to hand as a reference if necessary.

Why does dry needling work?

Part three: Other approaches

Other dry needling approaches are discussed in detail by providing the current research, clinical application of the techniques and treatment methods. The following approaches are covered: superficial dry needling, dry needling from a western medical acupuncture perspective, intramuscular stimulation and fus subcutaneous needling.

The authors refer to the existing evidence and, if necessary, mention the restrictions. Where there is a lack of research and where the authors express their opinion, this is clearly stated and discussed throughout the book.

"Dry needling is effective to reduce acute and chronic pain and to improve motor performance, range of motion and strength."

The textbook is recommended to anyone who is interested in the topic or is planning a dry needling course, but it is not a substitute for practical training, but an excellent training companion.

This book is ideal for anyone who has completed dry needling courses and is refreshing their knowledge of specific muscle techniques, evidence of the treatment of certain conditions or other dry needling approaches would like that was not dealt with in their courses.

Reading about the research in support of this modality and the evidence of its use in certain medical conditions will encourage any trained practitioner to use dry needling with confidence and to educate their patients with evidence-based explanations.

Trigger point drying needles. An evidence-based and clinically-based approach

Since the first edition was published in 2013, the use of dry needling in clinical practice has expanded dramatically worldwide. In fact, more and more experts are using dry needling to effectively relieve pain.
