Sue Pressman, 69th President of the ACA

I n The spirit of resilience, when we swing from the darkness into the light, anything is possible. The sky is no longer the limit.

On February 18, a NASA helicopter called Ingenuity, attached to a rover called Perseverance, landed in Jezero crater on Mars. Ingenuity made its first of several flights on the planet on April 19, while Perseverance continues to explore the terrain of Mars. It's quite a fascinating and uplifting success story.

After more than a year of turbulence and sacrifice, there is much hope. I see optimism for new beginnings, new opportunities, new ways of working, new ways of coming together, and new ways to appreciate each other. This is my vision when we look to the future.

Looking back on my guided tour last year, it was a privilege to lead and represent you – professional consultants – at virtual conferences and meetings at home and abroad. Some of my work included setting up task forces to improve the association. Establish the very first ACA Anti-Racism Commission to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of the ACA and our profession; Create an organization-wide mentoring program with more than 500 participants (special thanks to all mentors who volunteer and impart wisdom to early professional advisors); Support the continued progress of the Intergovernmental Pact on Transferability of Consultant Licenses across State Borders; Providing keynote speeches and presentations on key aspects of counseling; Contribution to advocacy of legislation; Opening of the ACA Virtual Conference Experience (with the largest number of participants in an ACA conference – over 6,000 – for more than 30 years); Collaborate and make decisions on major issues relating to the advisory profession with our amazing volunteer Governing Council leaders … and the list goes on.

You might ask how these things could be achieved amid a pandemic when the world was locked. My answer is: Thanks to the ingenuity and perseverance of resilient professional consulting colleagues, an incredibly talented and dedicated ACA staff and our new world of digitization, we have not skipped a beat. We figured out how to continue serving those in need of advisory services, reaching us and our customers through technology, and connecting with the world from dining tables, home offices, or in my case, a 1948 pine-paneled attic .

When I think back to a year that has become a career highlight for me, please think with me about the quotes that were in my "Counseling Today" columns. Each served as a driver for that month's column.
