As I write this post, I am in a delightful little B & B in a small seaside town on the south coast of New South Wales. In my new role, I travel here once a month to visit the staff I manage, and it's always a nice place to visit.
To get home, it usually takes a 2-hour drive to Canberra to catch a flight to Melbourne, and then another long drive of almost 2 hours to Bendigo. It's a long day!
But unfortunately the journey of tomorrow will be longer than usual.
Due to bushfires between here and Canberra, I have to make a detour to turn a 2-hour drive into a nearly 4-hour hike. (Sigh)
So I have a choice.
I can complain about my bad luck.
I can fear the extra long drive.
I can moan that I had to set my alarm two hours earlier.
I can try to pity everyone I speak to.
Or I enjoy the detour.
The reality is that I drive through a beautiful landscape and connect beautiful views of the coast with rugged mountains.
And what do I have to complain about compared to those whose property and life are at risk from the fires?
The next time life forces you on a detour from your planned path, do not sulk and be sorry, just keep going and enjoy the journey.
