I understand that during the current COVID-19 crisis, some people are paranoid when it comes to shaking hands.

I know you wash your hands, but what about the other person?

There is no guarantee of their hygiene, but that does not mean that we cannot connect in any way, and the worst thing we can do in such moments is to become impolite and impersonal.

We need human connection, so what are the alternatives?

Smile and nod. I know it seems obvious, but just because you don't want to shake hands doesn't mean you can't recognize the other person.
Use your words. You may not be able to physically connect, but you can still say, "Hey man, it's great to see you."
Compliments on her shoes. Say something nice about the other person, it doesn't have to be their shoes, but it's a good place to start.
Send a text. So this is not the case if you are actually standing in front of someone. That would be insane. However, if you work from home, make sure to contact the people you normally shake hands with to keep in touch.
Tap feet. I know it sounds crazy, but maybe with the other person you can tap your left and then your right feet. In the worst case, it will make you smile and your feet are covered with shoes, so there is no risk.

I know that these are simple ideas, but this is about making sure that, at a time when many people feel anxious and concerned, we can find a way to continue to connect and build with others.

I hear many people say that a crisis causes the worst in people.

Let's make sure we find a way to get the best out of people.
